Police in Lagos State have taken a man into custody after a video showing him allegedly assaulting a toddler for failing to read went viral on social media.
The incident came to the attention of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), which said it received a report and subsequently established contact with the child’s mother.
According to the agency, the mother had already reported the incident at the Imota Police Station.
The DSVA said officers at the Family Support Unit confirmed that the alleged perpetrator was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and remains in police custody while investigations continue.
The agency said the child and the mother have also been referred to a General Hospital for immediate medical attention and further assessment.
The video, which circulated widely online, reportedly showed the man repeatedly hitting the toddler on the head and body with what appeared to be a charger cable, prompting calls for authorities to intervene.
