The Federal Government is set to bring together key players in Nigeria’s gas industry to develop strategies for a more competitive and commercially driven gas market.
The high-level Gas Market Maturity Workshop is being organised by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) and the Decade of Gas Secretariat in partnership with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
The meeting will focus on the next stage of Nigeria’s gas market development, with stakeholders expected to examine reforms that could strengthen competition and improve commercial transactions across the sector.
A major issue on the agenda is the development of a gas pricing framework that balances affordability for Nigerian consumers with the need to attract investment in upstream production and expand gas supply.
Participants will also examine commercial contracting arrangements and ways of transitioning different segments of the market towards greater use of willing-buyer, willing-seller transactions.
The discussions are expected to align the evolving gas market with provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act while supporting the Federal Government’s policy of using natural gas as a transition fuel.
The workshop is also expected to establish measurable indicators for determining when various parts of the gas market are sufficiently mature to operate under more market-driven contracting arrangements.
The initiative comes as the government seeks to deepen domestic gas utilisation and create a market structure capable of supporting increased investment, reliable supply and broader economic activity across Nigeria’s gas value chain.
