The Federal Government has announced plans to shut the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to carry out major runway rehabilitation works.
The temporary closure, scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, is aimed at improving aviation safety and operational efficiency ahead of the Christmas travel season.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the development, explaining that the rehabilitation would address deteriorating sections of the runway.
According to a statement from the minister, the project will involve repairing damaged portions of the runway, treating surface cracks, filling potholes, resurfacing and extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
The rehabilitation is being undertaken through a partnership between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government.
Keyamo disclosed that he had discussed the planned closure with Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, and other key stakeholders in the South-East, who agreed on the need to temporarily shut the facility to facilitate the work.
The minister’s statement advised passengers scheduled to travel through the airport during the period to contact their airlines for updates on flight cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
The airport is expected to resume operations after the rehabilitation project is completed.
