Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has called for urgent measures to improve safety in artisanal mining following the deaths of 37 miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State.
Idris, in a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, expressed sympathy to Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, the victims’ families and the people of Niger State over the incident.
The governor said the deaths, which reportedly involved alleged minors, underscored the need for stronger regulation of artisanal mining activities and strict enforcement of safety standards.
He stressed that better regulation was necessary to protect people involved in mining and reduce the risks associated with unregulated mining activities.
Idris also pledged Kebbi State’s cooperation with the Niger State Government in promoting safer mining practices, increasing public awareness and creating alternative livelihood opportunities for vulnerable youths living in communities along the states’ shared border.
The governor prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and asked God to grant their families the strength to cope with the loss.
He further directed relevant authorities in Kebbi State to observe a moment of reflection and offer special prayers in honour of the victims.
