The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has promised a thorough and transparent investigation into allegations surrounding the death of a 22-year-old nursing student, Taiwo Godwin.
The hospital management gave the assurance following reports alleging that oxygen was not administered to the student despite his worsening condition before he died at the facility.
Godwin, a Post-Basic Nursing student, reportedly had asthma and was taken to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties while playing football.
A report on the incident quoted one of his colleagues as alleging that the student did not receive oxygen despite his deteriorating condition. However, the circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be established.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ajibola Abiola, disclosed the ongoing investigation in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to the statement, the investigation is focused on establishing the circumstances surrounding Godwin’s death at the hospital’s General Medical Practice Unit.
The management said it understood the grief and distress caused by the incident and extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider nursing community.
It also assured students, staff and members of the public that the investigation would be conducted impartially and transparently.
“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.
The hospital added that the investigation would be expedited in accordance with established procedures and that it would cooperate with relevant authorities and stakeholders where necessary.
The incident has reportedly generated additional concern because it was said to be the second death of a nursing student from the same school at the facility this year.
However, the hospital did not establish any connection between the reported incidents in its statement.
The management urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudice to its findings.
It reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and maintaining high standards of medical care.
The hospital also expressed sympathy with the bereaved family and prayed for strength for those affected by the loss.
