Nigeria’s entertainment industry has lost one of its most recognisable veteran actors, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ family confirmed his death on September 16, 2026, in a statement shared by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva. The family described him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to respect their privacy as they mourn.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs built an acting career spanning more than five decades, moving from British theatre and television to international productions before becoming one of the defining figures of Nigerian cinema.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and began his professional career in Britain, where he appeared in several television productions and international films.
After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became a prominent figure in the country’s developing film industry and was widely recognised for his commanding performances in Nollywood productions.
His contribution to the arts earned him several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. He also received an AMAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.
Beyond acting, Jacobs played a role in developing Nigeria’s creative industry. He and Silva co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, through which they were involved in production, distribution and training in the performing arts.
Jacobs was also a familiar figure in Nigerian popular culture, with his distinctive voice and authoritative screen presence making him particularly associated with roles such as traditional rulers, chiefs and father figures.
His death comes after years in which false reports about his passing circulated on social media and were repeatedly dismissed by his family and colleagues. This time, however, his family has officially confirmed his death.
Jacobs leaves behind his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren.
The family has not yet announced funeral arrangements.
