The Federal Government has begun work on a new National Control Centre in Osogbo, Osun State, as part of efforts to strengthen the management and stability of Nigeria’s electricity grid.
The facility, being constructed for the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), is expected to replace the existing control centre, which has been in operation for 64 years.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the new centre would provide NISO with real-time visibility of activities across the national grid, enabling operators to identify and respond to system disturbances more quickly.
According to a statement issued by the Minister, the project is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address structural weaknesses affecting electricity supply and improve the efficiency of grid operations.
The centre will be equipped with an integrated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, large-format monitoring displays and advanced analytics.
These technologies are expected to help operators detect potential faults early, plan preventive maintenance and make better use of available generation and transmission capacity.
The facility is also expected to strengthen the grid’s response to system failures, support the integration of renewable energy sources and improve Nigeria’s participation in the West African Power Pool.
The government said the project would further enhance physical and cybersecurity measures around critical electricity infrastructure.
Upon completion, the new control centre is expected to provide NISO with improved tools for monitoring and coordinating the national grid, with the broader aim of supporting a more stable electricity system.
