The Lagos State Government has commenced steps to provide dedicated electricity to the Iju-Akute Waterworks through a 26-megawatt (MW) embedded power project.
The initiative, being developed as the Akute Independent Power Project (IPP) by Agrigate Utilities Limited, is aimed at improving the reliability of electricity available to the waterworks and supporting the sustained delivery of water services across the state.
The first phase of the project is expected to deliver 9MW, while subsequent phases will increase the total generation capacity to 26MW.
As part of preparations for the commencement of the project, officials of the Lagos State Government and representatives of the project partners inspected power-generating equipment supplied by Jubaili Bros Nigeria.
The inspection was carried out to verify the quality and specifications of the equipment ahead of its delivery, installation and deployment for the first phase.
Speaking during the exercise, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, described the project as strategically important to Lagos State’s water infrastructure.
Ogunleye urged the stakeholders involved in the project to maintain accountability, comply with agreed specifications and meet established timelines to ensure successful delivery.

The Chief Executive Officer of Agrigate Utilities Limited, Olufemi Bakare, appreciated the Lagos State Government and other project partners for their support.
Bakare acknowledged the challenges involved in delivering the project within a short timeframe but said continued cooperation among stakeholders had helped drive its implementation.
He assured that Agrigate Utilities Limited remained committed to completing the project within the agreed timeframe and providing the technical support required for its long-term operation.
Also present was the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Lotu Akingbe.
Representatives of Jubaili Bros Nigeria, including its Head of Commercial, Mohammed Farhat, and General Manager, Ahmed Dahshi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supplying the required equipment and technical services.
They said the equipment would be delivered in line with the required specifications and supported with the necessary technical services to ensure efficient and sustainable performance.
The inspection was also attended by the General Manager of the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA), K.A.T. Balogun; Director of Production, Engr. Agiri Mustapha; Director of Power, Engr. Olusaya-Stella; and other senior officials of the Lagos State Government.
With preparations for delivery, installation and deployment of the equipment ongoing, the project is expected to strengthen the power supply supporting the Iju-Akute Waterworks.
