The Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys’ Association (AGSOBA) has demanded the retraction of a report alleging that the school charges ₦10,500 for the registration of students into JSS1 and SS1.
The association described the report as false, questioning the process through which the alleged fee was reported and whether the school authorities were contacted for clarification before the information was broadcast.
In a statement signed by the President-General of AGSOBA Global, Dr Obafemi Kotoye, the association said Abeokuta Grammar School does not collect ₦10,500 as a registration fee from students entering JSS1 or SS1.
Kotoye called on the broadcaster and the radio station involved to disclose the source of the information and explain the evidence relied upon before the report was aired.
The association also questioned whether the school principal, management or other relevant authorities were given an opportunity to respond to the allegation.
AGSOBA urged the media organisation to issue a public correction and retraction of the report, stressing that the same platform used to circulate the allegation should be used to correct it.
The association further called for a review of the organisation’s editorial and verification procedures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
While acknowledging the media’s responsibility to investigate institutions and report issues of public interest, AGSOBA stressed that such duties should be carried out with accuracy, fairness and accountability.
The association also advised parents, prospective students, old boys and members of the public to obtain information directly from the appropriate school authorities rather than relying on unverified claims circulating through social media, informal channels or broadcast platforms.
Established in 1908, Abeokuta Grammar School is one of Nigeria’s longstanding educational institutions. AGSOBA said it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders to protect the reputation and heritage of the school.
