The Lagos State Government has approved new welfare packages for workers in its state-owned tertiary institutions as part of efforts to resolve the ongoing industrial action by university-based unions.
The approval covers several demands presented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved the domestication and implementation of agreements reached with the unions.
Under the new arrangement, academic staff will receive a 40 per cent Consolidated Tertiary Allowance (CATA) and 10 per cent Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
The government also approved monthly allowances of N70,000 for Readers and N145,000 for Professors, while non-academic staff across Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions will receive revised allowances of 35 per cent.
The approved benefits will take effect from January 1, 2026, with the accumulated arrears to be paid in two instalments alongside the October and November 2026 salaries.
The state government further stated that the approved allowances would be exempt from tax.
Sule said relevant government agencies had been directed to begin immediate implementation of the approved welfare packages in accordance with existing financial regulations.
The commissioner appealed to the leadership of ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT in Lagos State-owned universities to suspend the strike and return to work, following the government’s fulfilment of the agreed welfare demands.
He thanked the unions for their patience and maturity throughout the negotiation process, expressing hope that the latest development would pave the way for the resolution of the industrial dispute and the restoration of normal academic activities.
