Academic activities were disrupted at the International School, University of Lagos, on Wednesday as staff members protested over their alleged removal from the university’s payroll.
The protest reportedly affected teaching activities and prevented students from taking a scheduled mid-term examination at the school.
The workers gathered at the school’s main gate, where they chanted solidarity songs and demanded the restoration of their names to the university’s payroll.
They also called for the payment of outstanding allowances and other benefits, as well as the implementation of a court judgment they said was in their favour.
Despite the protest, the school’s pedestrian gate remained open, allowing students to gain access to the premises.
The protesting workers displayed placards with messages including, “Equal Work, Equal Rights,” “ISL tutors deserve their due,” and “Other UNILAG staff paid, ISL tutors still owed.”
The dispute reportedly arose after the workers attempted to register on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and discovered that their names were not listed on the platform.
The development prompted concerns among the staff, who subsequently demanded clarification and action from the university authorities.
The workers maintained that their exclusion from the payroll had affected their entitlements and called on the relevant authorities to address the issue.
The protest came as teaching and examination activities were scheduled to take place, resulting in the suspension of classes and the non-conduct of the mid-term examination.
The workers are seeking the restoration of their payroll status and the settlement of their outstanding benefits, while also demanding compliance with the court judgment they referenced.
