The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspected cultist, Idris Ob arayi, and recovered a locally made pistol and one live cartridge during an operation in Abeokuta.
The arrest followed a distress call received at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, reporting suspected gunshots and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu area of Abeokuta.
According to the police, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit immediately mobilised to the area, forcing the suspects to flee.
During the pursuit, the operatives recovered the firearm and ammunition, while continued tracking and investigation led to the arrest of Ob arayi at his hideout in Ita Ogboni, Igbore, Abeokuta, at about 5:45 p.m. the same day.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly admitted to being a member of the Aiye confraternity and claimed ownership of the recovered pistol and cartridge.
The police said efforts were ongoing to arrest other suspects who fled the scene and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the SWAT operatives for their prompt response and sustained follow-up that led to the arrest.
Ojajuni reassured residents of the command’s commitment to proactive policing and urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities through appropriate police channels.
He also directed that the manhunt for the fleeing suspects be sustained, assuring residents that the command would continue to take prompt action on credible information to safeguard lives and property across the state.
The police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abeokuta.
