The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has urged Nigerians to embrace integrity, discipline and responsible citizenship, saying the decisions made today will shape the future of the country.
Ojajuni made the call on Thursday at an Independence Day programme organised by the International Friendship League (IFL) at the Presidential Conference Hall of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
The event, themed “Nigeria at 66: A Call to Citizenship Transformation,” featured a symposium, “Transformed Citizens, Transformed Nation,” attended by leaders, academics, professionals and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the commissioner said the Independence anniversary provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s values, leadership and development.
He urged citizens to consider the impact of their conduct and decisions on generations yet unborn.
According to him, national transformation must begin with individuals before extending to institutions, leadership and society.
Ojajuni identified integrity, discipline, knowledge, service and respect for shared values as important principles needed for national development.
Reflecting on the importance of preserving knowledge and values, the commissioner recalled that when some professors questioned his decision to pursue a PhD, he told them his objective was “to give future generations the knowledge of the past, so that our values and lessons would not die with us.”
He commended the International Friendship League for providing a platform for discussions on citizenship, leadership and national development.
Ojajuni also urged Nigerians at home and abroad to use the 66th Independence anniversary to renew their commitment to the country and contribute positively to its development.
