Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and former governor Yahaya Bello have visited the Abuja residence of former governor Ibrahim Idris to condole with his family following his death at the age of 77.
Idris, who governed Kogi State from 2003 to 2012, died in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026. His death was confirmed by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed, according to reports.
Ododo and Bello were accompanied during the condolence visit by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abdullahi Bello, and other senior government officials.
The visit was disclosed by Onogwu Muhammed, Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor on Public Relations and former Chief Press Secretary to Yahaya Bello, in a Facebook post on Sunday.
Idris, popularly known as “Ibro”, became governor in 2003 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and remained in office until January 2012, making him the longest-serving governor in Kogi State’s history.
His 2007 re-election was nullified following a legal challenge, after which he won the March 2008 re-run election and returned to office. He was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada in January 2012.
Following the former governor’s death, Governor Ododo declared a three-day mourning period in his honour and directed that the national and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast at government offices and designated public institutions.
The state government also announced plans for a state burial for the former governor.
Details concerning the cause of death were not immediately disclosed by the family.
