The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has extended its petrol discount programme across its retail outlets nationwide until October 31, assuring Nigerians that the initiative is not a return to fuel subsidy.
The company said the extension was aimed at providing temporary relief to households and businesses grappling with rising petrol prices amid global crude oil market uncertainties linked to the Middle East conflict.
The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Limited, Andy Odeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, explaining that the discount was introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
According to the company, the initiative will continue following the Federal Government’s renewed efforts to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices on Nigerians.
NNPC said the discount was intended to ease the financial burden of transportation and business operations, while supporting the government’s broader measures to mitigate the impact of higher energy costs.
It, however, clarified that the initiative applies exclusively to NNPC Retail outlets and does not establish a uniform pump price nationwide or change the market-based pricing system for petroleum products.
The company urged Nigerians to disregard claims suggesting that the discount represents a restoration of the petrol subsidy removed by the Federal Government.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a reliable supply of petroleum products and working with the government and other stakeholders to reduce the economic pressure on consumers.
NNPC added that it would continue to provide clear information about its pricing initiatives to enable customers to make informed purchasing decisions.
