The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says its ongoing modernisation efforts are aimed at strengthening trade and revenue generation as the Federal Government works towards achieving a $1 trillion economy.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said the economic target could be achieved if government policies and strategies were effectively implemented, stressing that institutions must convert national aspirations into measurable outcomes.
Adeniyi said the NCS had moved beyond discussions to implementing practical reforms capable of improving the business and trading environment.
He identified initiatives such as the deployment of B’Odogwu, the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme and the Advance Ruling mechanism as part of the Service’s modernisation drive.
According to him, the reforms are designed to facilitate legitimate trade, provide greater predictability for businesses and enhance revenue collection.
The Customs chief stressed that achieving the $1 trillion economic target should not be seen as the responsibility of government alone, noting that institutions, businesses and citizens all have roles to play.
He added that the Customs Service, given its responsibilities for revenue collection, trade facilitation and border management, was strategically positioned to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
