More than 100 students in two public secondary schools in Abuja have benefited from an education support initiative organised by the Abuja Metropolitan Lions Club (AMLC).
The project, themed “Empowering Minds, Equipping Futures: Literacy and Learning for All,” was held on Wednesday, September 23, to mark World Literacy Day.
The initiative was implemented at Government Secondary School, Gwarimpa Life Camp, and Model Girls Junior Secondary School (MGJSS), ACO Estate, Lugbe.
As part of the programme, the club paid the school fees of 10 indigent and out-of-school students to enable them return to the classroom.
The AMLC also distributed 600 customised 60-leaf exercise books and 100 customised school bags across the two schools. Each school received 300 exercise books and 50 school bags.
The beneficiaries of the learning materials were selected by the respective school managements in collaboration with the club.
The selection process considered academic performance, discipline, punctuality, neatness and participation in school activities, with the organisers saying the approach was intended to reward positive behaviour and encourage other students to pursue academic excellence.
The programme also featured sensitisation sessions aimed at highlighting the importance of literacy and education, followed by the presentation of the educational materials to the selected students.
The club said the initiative directly benefited more than 100 students, while over 200 students and members of the wider school communities were reached through the sensitisation activities.
The project was preceded by an online awareness campaign organised by the club on September 11 to promote discussions around literacy and access to education.
School principals and staff at the two institutions welcomed the intervention, describing it as support that could motivate students to remain focused on their education.
The Abuja Metropolitan Lions Club said the project forms part of its efforts to promote literacy, improve access to educational resources and support young people in pursuing their academic goals.
