A Gas plant located within a residential area of Kubwa, Federal Capital Territory, was gutted by fire on Sunday morning, prompting an emergency response coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The incident occurred at about 6:20 a.m., with NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office activating relevant emergency response agencies, including the Federal Fire Service, following a distress alert.
NEMA deployed Emergency Response Ambulance Bay teams from Kubwa and AYA to support firefighting and emergency operations, while its DSAR and DPRF teams supervised activities at the scene.
The fire was brought under control at about 7:45 a.m., after which emergency responders dampened the affected area to prevent possible secondary explosions.
NEMA said preliminary assessments showed that no lives were lost in the incident.
However, a vehicle was completely destroyed by the fire, while adjoining buildings reportedly sustained severe damage.
The emergency operation was concluded at about 8:45 a.m.
Following the incident, the DSAR, on behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, commended the emergency responders and other participating stakeholders for their prompt intervention and professionalism.
NEMA also called on regulatory agencies and other relevant authorities to ensure that gas plants are established in line with prescribed safety standards, particularly with regard to their distance from residential communities.
The agency said proper siting of gas facilities would help reduce the risks associated with fire outbreaks and protect lives and property in surrounding communities.
