US President Donald Trump has rejected international efforts to establish a global framework for controlling artificial intelligence, saying the United States would not support measures that could restrict the technology’s growth.
Trump made the position known on Tuesday while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he also announced that the US would henceforth refer to artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence” in official documents.
The president argued that the term “artificial” makes the technology appear fake, despite its growing capabilities.
He said the United States would continue to encourage the development of the technology rather than impose measures that could slow its advancement.
Trump said he was not prepared to “stifle” the growth of a technology he expects could become more significant than the Industrial Revolution, while acknowledging that authorities would need to monitor its development.
He also said US law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Justice, would monitor the sector and intervene if necessary.
Trump further announced that US government documents would replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence”, expressing hope that other countries would eventually adopt the terminology.
The announcement came as AI remains a major issue at the UN, with international leaders and technology experts debating how to balance technological development with safety and oversight.
Trump’s position contrasts with calls from some technology leaders and other policymakers for stronger safeguards and greater oversight of rapidly advancing AI systems.
