Inspector-General of Police has filed charges against the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, and two others over the alleged unlawful interception and modification of a woman’s computer data.
The other defendants are Mufutau Ibrahim and Tajudeen Opoola.
The charges were filed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before the Federal High Court in Lagos, following allegations that the defendants unlawfully accessed and intercepted the telephone and computer network of Dr Adeola Kehinde.
According to the charge sheet dated October 2, 2026, the alleged offences occurred on August 23, 2026, at the university in Ekiti State.
The prosecution accused the defendants of conspiring to intercept the transmission of Kehinde’s computer data and its contents without her authorisation.
In another count, they were accused of deliberately using technical means to intercept data transmitted through her computer network without lawful authority.
The defendants also face an allegation of causing the modification of data stored in Kehinde’s computer system or network without lawful authority.
The charges were brought under Sections 27(1)(b), 12(1) and 16(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
Additionally, the defendants were accused of allegedly abusing their offices by carrying out arbitrary acts prejudicial to Kehinde’s rights through the interception of her telephone and computer network.
The alleged conduct was said to be punishable under Section 104 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The charge sheet was signed by a prosecuting counsel attached to the Directorate of Legal Services of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre.
However, the charge document did not indicate when the defendants would be arraigned or whether they had entered pleas to the allegations.
The allegations remain unproven, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
