Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged to ensure the payment of 2025 minimum wage arrears owed to resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, by mid-November 2026.
The commitment formed part of agreements reached between the state government and the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) following the intervention of the governor in the 50-day industrial dispute.
The association announced the suspension of its strike for an initial period of eight weeks after an emergency general meeting held on Friday, October 16, 2026.
In a letter of appreciation addressed to the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the doctors said they would resume full clinical duties on Saturday, October 17, to allow the government and hospital management to implement the agreements.
The association said the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by Makinde at the Gangway Hall on Thursday, October 15.
Three major demands were presented during the meeting: passage of the Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA) Bill, payment of the 2025 minimum wage arrears and implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
On the revised allowance table, the government agreed to establish a multi-stakeholder committee comprising representatives of the resident doctors, the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), the Ministry of Health and the Governor’s Office.
The committee is expected to develop implementation modalities for the revised allowances within six weeks.
Regarding the MRTA Bill, the association said Makinde committed to ensuring its passage on or before October 28, 2026, and assent within the first week of November.
The doctors described the commitments as evidence of the government’s willingness to address their welfare concerns and strengthen healthcare delivery in the state.
The association’s letter was signed by its President, Dr Mustapha Adedapo; Public Relations Officer, Dr Abdulrahman Fofie; and Assistant General Secretary, Dr Oladayo Bada.
While expressing optimism that the government would fulfil the agreements within the stipulated timelines, the association said it remained committed to constructive engagement and industrial harmony.
The eight-week suspension provides an opportunity for the government to implement the agreed measures while resident doctors return to duty and resume healthcare services at the teaching hospital.
