The Ondo State Government has ordered the fumigation of the river around the site of the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, following concerns over a strong odour reported by residents.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa gave the directive as part of measures to prevent possible health risks and disease outbreaks linked to suspected contamination of the water source.
The river is an important source of livelihood for residents of Igbokoda and surrounding communities, making the pollution concerns particularly significant.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the governor also directed the Ilaje Local Government Council to deploy water tankers to provide potable water to residents if investigations establish that the river is severely polluted and unsafe for use.
The temporary water supply arrangement is expected to continue until a permanent solution is found to the pollution concerns.
Aiyedatiwa further directed the state Ministries of Health and Environment to distribute nose masks and other essential health kits to residents as precautionary measures against potential health hazards.
The governor also reaffirmed the state government’s support for the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing evacuation operations at the crash site, while assuring residents of continued efforts to protect their health and welfare.
